Winter is fast approaching and if recent weather updates are to be believed it may be bringing it may be bringing with it heavy snow fall and plunging temperatures meaning winter driving could be a lot more difficult.
Even the most experienced drivers can have a hard time navigating icy roads in poor visibility, however, by implementing a few easy steps risk of accident may be greatly reduced.
1. INSPECT YOUR VEHICLE BEFORE EVERY TRIP
It is essential to prepare your truck for winter as this may prevent any major problems. Checks should include engine oil, antifreeze levels, and tyre pressure. It is recommended you have your vehicle checked by a mechanic to ensure that it is roadworthy and ready to withstand the wear and tear of the winter season.
2. ALLOW EXTRA SPACE
It is said that stopping distance can increase by up to ten times when on an icy road. [1] Allowing extra distance between yourself and other vehicles when conditions are poor could reduce the risk of impact should you need to stop unexpectedly.
3. BE PREPARED
Highway code UK recommend carrying an emergency kit for you and your vehicle when travelling in poor conditions. This can include items such as de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and shovel. A warm drink and emergency food will also be beneficial if your vehicle breaks down and you must wait for recovery.[2] Ensure you have roadside assistance to fall back on should find yourself stranded.
4. LIGHT UP, LIGHT UP
Winter often brings dark days as well as dark nights. When visibility is poor make sure to put on your truck’s headlights. This will allow other drivers to see your clearly and maintain a safe distance from your truck.
5. SLOW AND STEADY
Driving in snow and icy covered roads often requires a slow and steady speed as this may compensate for poor traction. Going at a slower speed will also give you more time to react should anything go wrong.
